SHIVERS (1975)

"Roger, I had a very disturbing dream last night. In this dream I found myself making love to a strange man. Only I'm having trouble you see, because he's old... and dying... and he smells bad, and I find him repulsive. But then he tells me that everything is erotic, that everything is sexual. You know what I mean? He tells me that even old flesh is erotic flesh. That disease is the love of two alien kinds of creatures for each other. That even dying is an act of eroticism. That talking is sexual. That breathing is sexual. That even to physically exist is sexual. And I believe him, and we make love beautyfully."

RABID (1977)

"You carry the plague, you killed hundreds of people!"
"You don't know what you're talking about! I'm still me... I'm still Rose."
"You're still Rose... You're NOT Rose!"
"I have to have blood. It's all I can eat. And it's not my fault."

THE BROOD (1979)

"They'll kill you if you try to take her away from them."
"Why?"
"Because in a sense, she's one of them."
"You're insane!"
"They exist, you've seen them."
"They're just freaks... deformed children. You've got Nola taking care of them, I'm sure she just loves being their surrogate mother."
"She's not their surrogate mother, Frank. She's their real mother. Their only mother. (...) They are her children, Frank. More exactly, they're the children of her rage."

SCANNERS (1981)

"This was a test campaign used in 1947 to market a new product. The product was a drug, a tranquilizer called 'Ephemerol'. It was aimed at pregnant women. If it had worked it would have been marketed all over North America. But the campaign failed and the drug failed, because it had a side effect on the unborn children. An invisible side effect."

"It created Scanners."

VIDEODROME (1983)

"The battle for the mind of North America will be fought in the video arena: the Videodrome. The television screen is the retina of the mind's eye. Therefore, the television screen is part of the physical structure of the brain. Therefore, whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore, television is reality, and reality is less than television."

THE DEAD ZONE (1983)

"In the last few months I've done some research into the area of psychic phenomena. Several cases such as yours have been documented, I was surprised to discover. And the pattern is always the same. As the spells, the visions, grow stronger and more powerful, the body weakens. But I don't really need any research or documentation to see that this thing is sucking the life right out of you. One look at you can tell me that."

THE FLY (1986)

"You're afraid to dive into the plasma pool, aren't you? You're afraid to be destroyed and recreated, aren't you? I bet you think you woke me up about the flesh, don't you? But you only know society's straight line about the flesh. You can't penetrate beyond society's sick, great fear of the flesh. Drink deep or taste not the plasma spring! See what I'm saying? I'm not just talking about sex and penetration. I'm talking about penetration beyond the veil of the flesh, a deep, penetrating dive into the plasma pool!"

DEAD RINGERS (1988)

"Can I trust you to do that while I go to the city and don't watch you?"
"I don't know... Can you trust me?"
"Oh God... don't do this to me, Bev!"
"But I'm only doing it to me, Ellie. Don't you have a will of your own? Why don't you just go on with your very own life?"
"Do you remember the original Siamese twins?"
"Chang and Eng... they were joined at the chest."
"Remember how they died?"
"Chang died of a stroke in the middle of the night. He was always the sickly one, he was always the one who drank too much. When Eng woke up beside him and found that his brother was dead, he died of fright... right there in the bed."
"Does that answer your question?"

NAKED LUNCH (1991)

"(...) and the asshole said to him: 'It is you who will shut up in the end, not me... because we don't need you around here anymore. I can talk and eat and shit.' After that, he began waking up in the morning with transparent jelly like a tadpole's tail all over his mouth. He would tear it off his mouth and the pieces would stick to his hands like burning gasoline jelly and grow there. So, finally, his mouth sealed over and the whole head would have amputated spontaneously except for the eyes, you dig? That's the one thing that the asshole couldn't do was see. It needed the eyes."

M. BUTTERFLY (1993)

"You made me see the beauty of the story, of her death. It's... it's pure sacrifice. He's not worthy of it, but what can she do? She loves him so much. It's very beautiful."
"Well, yes, to a Westerner."
"I beg your pardon?"
"It's one of your favorite fantasies, isn't it? The submissive Oriental woman and the cruel white man."

CRASH (1996)

"The car crash is a fertilizing rather than a destructive event. A liberation of sexual energy mediating the sexuality of those who have died with an intensity that's impossible in any other form. Now, experience that, to live that, that is... That's my project."
"What about reshaping the human body by modern technology? I thought that was your project."
"That's just a crude sci-fi concept. It just kind of floats on the surface and doesn't threaten anybody. I use it to test the resilience of my potential partners in psychopathology."

eXistenZ (1999)

"Where are our real bodies? Are they all right? What if they're hungry? What if there's danger?"
"They're just where we left them. They're sitting quietly. Eyes closed. It's just like meditating."
"I feel really vulnerable. Disembodied."

SPIDER (2002)

"Mr. Cleg... How many shirts are you wearing? One, two, three... Four! Now really, is this absolutely necessary?"
"Oh, indeed it is, Madam. Clothes make the man, and the less there is of a man, the more the need for the clothes."
